We’re delighted to share that, from 12th April, you will have the opportunity to observe the magic of Cartier at close quarters through the V&A Museum’s special Cartier exhibition. Showcasing more than 350 of their finest creations, including jewels, gemstones, watches, and clocks, the exhibition is set to chart the evolution of Cartier’s unrivalled legacy since the turn of the 20th century.
Here at The Egerton House Hotel, we have nothing but respect and admiration for Cartier, the French luxury brand synonymous with the highest level of elegance, craftsmanship, and innovation. Cartier has a rich history that dates right back to 1847. Founded by Louis-François Cartier in Paris, the brand began as a small workshop specialising in fine jewellery. Its commitment to quality and artistic design quickly set it apart in a competitive industry, establishing Cartier as a go-to name for royalty, celebrities, and the aristocracy.
Louis-François' grandson, Louis Cartier, is often credited with transforming the company into a global brand. In the early 1900s, he introduced several groundbreaking designs that would become iconic, such as the Santos watch in 1904, which is considered one of the first modern wristwatches. This was a revolution in an era when pocket watches were de rigueur. Cartier’s ability to combine function with beauty marked the beginning of its expansion beyond jewellery into the realm of horology.
Cartier's clientele included some of the most notable figures of the 20th century, such as King Edward VII of England, who famously referred to Cartier as "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers." This royal endorsement, along with its lavish pieces and exceptional service, catapulted Cartier into the upper echelons of luxury.

The brand’s design language evolved over time, embracing Art Deco in the 1920s and 1930s, with sleek lines and geometric forms. The Tank watch, introduced in 1917, became a hallmark of the brand's sophistication and timeless style.
Today, Cartier remains a symbol of luxury, known not only for its jewellery and watches but also for its commitment to innovation, artistry, and excellence. Through the decades, the house has successfully maintained its heritage while continuing to evolve, making it one of the most revered brands in the world.
Owing to our close ties and long-standing partnership with the V&A, we’re able to treat our guests to complimentary tickets to even their most in-demand exhibitions, and we’re delighted to say that the Cartier exhibition is no exception.
