Victoria’s best cocktail venue

Located beneath London's largest Living Wall, recently replanted with more than 6,000 herbaceous plants to breathe life into our surroundings, bbar is a vibrant cocktail bar and restaurant in the heart of Victoria.

Our new menu plays homage to our heritage, with dishes that beautifully reflect the flavours of South Africa with a playful twist, from Boerewors Eggs Benedict with chilli chutney biltong to The Gatsby Sub, a Western Cape pulled BBQ short rib of beef.

Alongside this exceptional new menu, we have live mix sessions and DJ sets throughout the week, as well as contemporary signature cocktails created by our resident mixologists.

1627

No. 17 and No. 19 Egerton Terrace now stand on what was part of an 84-acre parcel of land left in trust in 1627 by Henry Smith, Alderman of the City of London, ‘for the relief and ransom of poor captives being slaves under Turkish pirates’.

Boyle’s Court Guide

1824

No. 17 first featured in Boyle’s Court Guide in 1824 when it was shown in the occupancy of Philip Edwards, a gentleman of private means, who remained here until about 1832.

1824

No. 19 was the home of Benjamin Jutsham in 1824, who for many years kept the library at Carlton House, the home of the Prince Regent [later George IV]. In his youth, Benny Jutsham was one of the Prince’s fellow roustabouts with both sharing a love of gambling.

British History online

1851

No. 19 passed to William Hope, a collector for a brewery, by 1851. Hope continued to occupy this house, with his wife, Amelia, and after her death with his second wife, Rosina. William and Rosina Hope continued here until about 1877, which may have been the year of William’s death.

Seeing London from a “Growler” Cab, 1855

1855

No. 17 passed to Charles Adam Woolley in 1855, a prosperous cab proprietor or ‘jobmaster’ who rented his horse drawn carriages out to drivers by the day. Charles Woolley died at his house in Egerton Terrace 14 January 1858 aged seventy-two. His widow, Eleanor, lived on here a year or so more.

Interior Of The Shop Of Wm. Neate, Goldsmith and Jeweller

1861

No. 19 passed to a jeweller William Cooper in 1861, a skilled wire-drawer who could turn an ounce of gold into a strand, thinner than a human hair, that would stretch for several thousand feet. His widow, Elizabeth lived on in this house until about 1880.

Countess Berchtold

1888

No.17 was in the occupation of Countess Berchtold by 1888, the wife of the Austro-Hungarian politician Count Berchtold. He is best remembered for delivering the ultimatum to Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand which led to the outbreak of the First World War.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

1889

No. 19 was sold to Reginald A. Coleridge by 1889, a descendant of the poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His cousin, the author and barrister, Stephen William Buchanan Coleridge was a frequent visitor and co-founder of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Nos 62–64 Knightsbridge in 1890.

1890

By the late 1890s No. 17 and No. 19 had passed into use as a private hotel. No. 17 returned to single family occupation between the wars but No. 19 continued to take paying guests.

Page Boy Jeremy Clyde at Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation

1943

From 1943 onwards until at least the mid-1980s both were occupied by the London Hostels Association, which provided affordable accommodation for visitors to London, including many who flocked to the capital for the 1948 Olympic Games and the present Queen’s coronation in 1953.

1992

By 1992 both properties were appearing in the London Post Office directories as ‘The Egerton House Hotel’. They continue so today as part of The Red Carnation Hotel Collection.

2009

In 2009 this five-star boutique hotel of 28 bedrooms was voted ‘London’s Most Excellent Hotel’ by Conde Nast Johansens.

The power of passion

"Located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, we offer a boutique retreat in an atmosphere of Victorian elegance, overlooking verdant, private residential gardens.

A short walk from the hotel are world-renowned attractions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum and the Royal Albert Hall, alongside Kensington Palace and Gardens in Hyde Park. Also on our doorstep are the famous department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols and the many high-end fashion boutiques of Knightsbridge.

We are proud of our award-winning traditional Afternoon Tea and our beautiful Bar, which offers London’s most famous martinis. Our neighborhood, which is a leading art and design district, is echoed throughout the hotel in the original works of art by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Erte, Ludwig Bemelmans, ‘Peanuts’ cartoon creator Charles M. Schulz, British cartoonist JAK and French caricaturist Sem.

We are wholly committed to sustainability: we use locally sourced produce for our menus, conduct food waste management procedures, have eliminated single-use plastics, and operate entirely without paper.

I have been General Manager of this beautiful townhouse hotel, which was recently recognised with a Forbes Five-Star rating, since 2012 and genuinely consider each member of my team to be part of my Egerton family. My team are chosen for their instinctual desire to care for our guests, including our adored canine visitors. We are here to welcome guests to experience the hotel and all the wonderful places that surround us."

- Michelle Devlin, General Manager
