London Graduations: Where to Stay & Celebrate

Graduation is one of those rare occasions when a trip to London deserves a little extra planning. After years of lectures, deadlines, exams, and late-night library sessions, crossing the stage calls for more than a quick photograph and a train home. It is a milestone worth celebrating properly, and often an opportunity to bring together family and friends who may have travelled from across the UK, or further afield, to share in the occasion.Whether you are the graduate arranging the celebrations yourself, a parent bringing the family together, or simply looking to treat someone after years of hard work, planning where to stay, eat, and celebrate can turn graduation day into a memorable London experience. With several of the capital’s leading universities concentrated around South Kensington and central London, choosing the right base can make the day considerably easier. Staying close to the ceremony keeps complicated journeys to a minimum, gives those travelling from further afield somewhere to gather, and provides a natural setting for the celebrations to continue once the formalities are over. For graduations at Imperial College London, the Royal College of Art, the Royal College of Music, and other central London universities, Knightsbridge makes a particularly convenient base, combining easy access to graduation venues with some of London’s best-known restaurants, museums, parks, and places to celebrate.Where to Stay for a London GraduationFor families searching for hotels near Imperial College London, The Egerton House Hotel places guests within easy reach of South Kensington while offering an intimate alternative to London's larger hotels. The Egerton is particularly well placed for graduations at three of South Kensington’s leading institutions. Imperial College London, the Royal College of Art’s Kensington campus, and the Royal College of Music are all around a 15 to 20-minute walk from the hotel, with each located close to the Royal Albert Hall. The Royal Albert HallIts Knightsbridge location also works well for families attending graduations elsewhere in central London. King's College London, University College London (UCL), and the London School of Economics (LSE) can be reached by Underground, making it possible for relatives travelling from different parts of the country, or from overseas, to gather in one central base. For extended families in particular, this can simplify the logistics considerably. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and the graduate can stay together, return to the hotel between plans, and celebrate without having to coordinate several journeys across London.Planning a Graduation in LondonSouth Kensington is home to an exceptional concentration of universities, conservatoires, and cultural institutions, making Knightsbridge a convenient base for several of London's best-known graduation celebrations. The Egerton is within walking distance of Imperial College London, the Royal College of Art's Kensington campus, and the Royal College of Music, while its central location also makes it easy to reach graduation venues elsewhere in the capital.Ceremony arrangements differ between institutions and can change from year to year, so it is always worth checking the latest information from your university before making plans. Whichever graduation you are attending, leave plenty of time for gown collection, photographs, receptions, and those all-important family pictures before booking lunch, Afternoon Tea, or dinner.Imperial College LondonImperial College LondonImperial's graduation ceremonies are held at the Royal Albert Hall, with other graduation activities taking place around its South Kensington campus. Graduates are encouraged to arrive well ahead of their ceremony, allowing time for check-in, gown collection, and photography before taking their seats.Staying nearby can make a busy graduation morning considerably easier. From The Egerton, families can enjoy breakfast together before heading towards South Kensington, rather than beginning the day with a longer journey across the capital.Royal College of ArtRoyal College of ArtFor Royal College of Art graduates, ceremony arrangements vary, with the College's annual Convocation held at prestigious London venues. In 2026, ceremonies take place at the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank, followed by a reception for graduates and their guests. The RCA's Kensington campus, however, sits in the heart of South Kensington close to the Royal Albert Hall, and is around a 15 to 20-minute walk from The Egerton. Graduation ceremonies take place in the College's Britten Theatre and are followed by a reception with canapés and sparkling wine in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall. With the ceremony and reception taking place at the College itself, families can spend much of the day in South Kensington before returning to Knightsbridge for a private celebration, dinner, or a well-earned graduation toast.Allow Time to Enjoy the DayWhichever university you are celebrating, resist the temptation to plan every hour too tightly. Graduation days often involve more than the ceremony itself, from collecting academic dress and attending university receptions to catching up with classmates and taking photographs with family and friends.Leaving some breathing room between the ceremony and your evening plans makes the day easier for everyone, particularly when relatives have travelled from further afield. It also gives you time to return to The Egerton, change out of academic dress, raise a glass together, and enjoy the next part of the celebration.Where to Celebrate a Graduation in LondonOnce the formalities are over, the focus can shift from ceremony to celebration. The Egerton's university graduation experience has been created specifically for graduates and their families, bringing accommodation, private dining, and personalised details together in one setting. Turning graduation into an overnight stay, or even a full weekend, gives families more time together and takes some of the pressure off the day itself. The Egerton lends itself particularly well to this kind of family occasion. Set within an elegant townhouse overlooking a garden square in Knightsbridge, the hotel has the character of a classic London residence, with individually designed rooms and suites, richly furnished interiors, and an intimate atmosphere that feels well suited to a milestone celebration. The Egerton's Martinis have become something of a Knightsbridge signature, while the mocktail masterclass provides an engaging option for families celebrating with younger guests or those who prefer not to drink alcohol. From there, the occasion can continue with Afternoon Tea, lunch, or dinner, allowing everyone to celebrate together without moving between several venues. For those staying another night, the following morning offers the chance to gather over breakfast and enjoy a little more of London before everyone begins their journey home. The concierge team can help bring the different elements together, from dining arrangements and celebration cakes to special requests and recommendations for spending the rest of a graduation weekend in London.Where to Take Graduation Photos in KnightsbridgeA cap and gown deserve a better backdrop than a hurried photograph outside the ceremony venue.South Kensington and Knightsbridge provide several excellent locations within walking distance of The Egerton.
